This won't be a long winded affair, because you're all most probably fed up to the eyeballs with Pennsylvanian historical buildings.
So here it is:

Fort Necessity - it had to be...
|
I won't bore you with all the details, except to say that it was here that, apparently, the first World War started. No, not the one in 1918, but the much earlier Seven Years War that was fought on a global scale starting 1754. It was the only battle that George Washington lost. (When he was fighting
for the British.) In the long term it resulted in a massive increase in the war effort of the British which finally ousted the French from North America.

Really it was just a storehouse to keep their powder dry.
|
Just think, if things had gone just a little bit differently on this pleasant meadow, the whole of North America may be eating lots of garlic, enjoying
tasty cheese, drinking good wine, eating bread that doesn't taste of corn syrup, crossing the road with gay abandon, wearing berets and if speaking English would have a very strong French accent. Think about it - imagine how the whole world would be now - totally different.
I read in the news lately that some Chinese activists have been arrested by the Japanese for landing on the contested island of Senkaku off Taiwan. The Chinese demand their release. Where will it all lead?
When you think about it, the way the world is today is the result of the many tiny little incidents in history - as well as the big ones. The small battle at Fort Necessity was over in a few hours.

Kyle and David - great talkers.
|
We managed to spend over four hours here, and there's not a great deal to see. What we did enjoy was talking to the staff - that's Kyle and David in costume there - because they were doing history degrees and had interesting perspectives on the past. Then we got nattering to the ladies who showed us just what the Indians were trading at the time.
|
No animals were harmed in the making of this demonstration - only for the first one.
|
Then we chatted to Jane in the office who gave us lots of info on where to go to see Native American history.
All in all a very interesting day. For us.
So tomorrow we're attempting to take public transport into Pittsburgh. Pray for us.

I know Annie our RV is big, but she does seem to blend in with the scenery.
